Providers Offer HD-Television Shortly Before The World Cup
High Definition TV has arrived in Romanian households. RCS & RDS and rival Romtelecom - the number one and three on the cable market - will present shortly before the start of the Soccer World Cup in South Africa their range of HD content. Customers can get it for just 5 Euro a month (plus tax), from the Deutsche Telekom subsidiary Romtelecom, four HD channels: two general, one sports and one documentary channel. Unlike its rival RDS & RCS, Romtelecom provides HD content both through cable and satellite. RCS & RDS on the other hand only announced to provide the Soccer World Cup in HD quality. In Romania, there are 3.48 million cable tv connections, and 2.33 million satellite connections. 0.32 million viewers receive their tv signal in digital quality.

E-Commerce Flourishes In Romania
The Romanian online trade seems to be booming. In the first quarter of this year, the Romanian operators of prepaid cards services Romcard Plus registered a transaction of 70 per cent over the first quarter last year. 31.85 million Euro have been implemented on-line payments by debit cards in the first three months of this year. The potential is huge. GeCAD, provider of e-payment services registered in the first quarter 575 000 transactions. The figures are extraordinary in deed: the number of transactions on telecommunications services has increased by 230 per cent; the payments of utilities by 178 per cent; the purchase of multimedia products by 160 per cent. Amazing: The travel industry recorded a transaction growth of 270 per cent in the first quarter of 2010.

Romanian Tax Authority Wants To Buy IT-Services Worth 6,5 Million Euro
The Romanian tax authorities ANAF has tendered a contract for IT services worth between 6.1 until 6.5 million Euro. The tender is held on the electronic tendering system e-licitatie.ro. Maintenance services and technical assistance for hardware and server software is required. The contract duration is fixed at 2 years. The decisive factor will be the most economical offer. Requirement for participation is to have at least one employee in each district capital, with the needed professional qualification, who can provide all required services. In Bucharest, the competitors must employ at least seven such employees.

Telecommunication Ministry Buys Legal Software for 90 Mil. Euro
"Illegal does matter" - this advertising slogan has apparently been taken seriously by the Romanian Telecommunications Ministry which signed with a number of Microsoft partners a contract for the equipment of PC workstations with 163,427 software licenses from Microsoft. In about 30 government agencies legal software packages worth a total of 90.18 million Euro is to be installed. The roll out will carried out by a consortium including the Swiss company D Con.Net, Comsoft Direct and Bechtle Romania, as well as Microsoft. The consortium was also the only one to bid at the appropriate announcement. The ministry will pay the full amount in ten installments, the contract value includes at least 50,000 hours of training.

Study: Romania Has Fourth Fastest Internet Connections
Romania occupies an encouraging fourth place in an international comparison of the speeds for internet connections. On average, the speed of the Internet connections lie at 6.2 Mbps (megabits per seconds). In Japan and Hong Kong, the average speed is about 7 and 8 Mbps. The South Koreans enjoy fastest internet with an average speed of 14.6 Mbps. The study was generated by Akamai, a server operator, which operates more than 55,000 servers worldwide. In the third quarter of 2009, more than 444 million IP addresses accessed the Akamai-servers. In Romania, 46 per cent of internet connections are said to run at a speed of more than 5 Mbps, 1.8 per cent with a higher speed of 25 Mbps.
